About

Alex Konijnenburg, also known as Alex Jr. or Riverside Jr. is a Dutch songwriter, singer and musician who’se songs are clearly rooted in the folk and blues tradition.

In the past Alex Jr. was the vocalist and guitarist of Big Will & the Bluesmen. The band recorded two albums; Trouble No More and Hard Times. Especially Hard Times, with a prominent guestrole by bluesguitarist Peter Struijk, was received very well by Dutch press and blues aficionados. The band toured successfully in Holland, Belgium and France.

In 2014 Alex recorded a solo album as Riverside Jr. called Would you baby? This album contains acoustic blues and folk songs, both originals and traditionals and it got some great reviews from blues magazines in the USA and UK. Later that year Alex and his bandmates Henk and Dave recorded Riverside Tales under the bandname The Bluetails. With swampy sounding, bare and deep bluessongs they perform on stage till this day on, occasionally assisted by Peter Struijk.

Alex Jr is also performing with Wil van der Ende on bluesharp as a duo, for mainly acoustic blues. Also duo performing if the chance comes up with Peter Struijk with acoustic blues, with Ron Smith with a more country / folk based repertoire and for special occasions together with his guitar playing son Jonah, who works as a barber in the famous barbershop Schorem / Scumbag in Rotterdam.

After reading “The Summer that Melted Everything” by Tiffany McDaniel in the summer of 2017, Alex was inspired to compose quiet a number of new songs.
Some of them in the singer songwriter tradition, some instrumentals and some in the folk / blues style. Definitely a new direction, more open to how inspiration  showed itself, less tied to bluesstructures and schemes.

For 2020 the plan was to do some albumrecordings with The Bluetails and maybe record some new solo work that was written the last couple of years. The idea is to see if this new material is suitable for releasing.

However, the Coronavirus changed everything, all shows for spring and summer 2020 were cancelled and we are all still waiting to see how all this will evolve. There will be some delay in recording and releasing new work but that is inevitable. Human health is what’ s most important now. And gladly we have the music to console and comfort our minds… we’ll just keep making music from the heart!
